Sofa Digest Bottom Line
Pay a little more, get a lot more. That’s the phrase our testing team came back to again and again when discussing the District 2-piece sectional from CB2. Sure, this is a $2000 sofa and you can get a great Campaign Living sofa for about $800 less and that makes excellent sense for a lot of costumers. Hell, in a lot of places you can pay a month’s rent for that amount of money. And if you live in New York or San Francisco, you might not make rent with those savings, but at least you'd get a few nice meals in.
But, here's what you get for the extra $800: optional white glove (in-home) delivery and assembly, higher-end and lighter weight construction, aesthetically pleasing lines that will give a pop of elegance to your living room, and perfectly designed size and shape for apartment living.
If you are just looking for an affordable, quickly delivered solution – check out our reviews of the Campaign Living and Burrow sofas. But if you want to upgrade a level, the CB2 District sectional is it. For a sofa that costs less than twice these other brands, it feels like you get twice the experience. While there are certainly even nicer sofas out there, above this price point it is rare that you’ll see this kind of bang for your buck.
Purchase & Delivery
CB2 has a wide range of great sofa options, and the District 2-piece sectional sofa is among the more entry-level options. The website clearly delineates between colors that are in-stock and ready for quick delivery (about 2 weeks) and custom colors that take 10-16 weeks for delivery. CB2 also breaks down the colors into price groups with in-stock fabrics costing between $1,999 and $2,399 for the more expensive fabric group. There are also significantly more expensive leather options. Finally, you can select whether the chaise portion of the sofa is on the left or right.
When purchasing an in-stock fabric, the 1 to 2 week delivery time is as good as you will find from an established furniture brand (think: Restoration Hardware, Crate & Barrel, etc.). The actual delivery process is a breeze.
The sofa will be brought into your home and placed in the exact location where you will be enjoying it.
As good as it gets, it will assembled for you by the delivery people at the time of delivery!
Ergonomics & Comfort
The District Sofa stands out as unique in this category. It’s firm – so firm in fact that you can set your coffee mug on the cushions while reading or catching up on the morning news. Yet, the firmness doesn’t diminish the comfort of sitting or lying on the sofa, at all. It's a dream to lay down on, and makes for a great makeshift guest bed, as softer / plusher sofas can cause back pains if you sleep on them for an entire night.
It’s also an excellent size for an apartment. It’s not gigantic, but there’s room to really spread out, and when you have two or more people on the District sofa chatting or watching a film, it just delivers a strong sense of community and connectedness. I found that living with the District sofa brought people together and cooked-up a pleasant, engaging mood I’ve rarely found with other sofas.
Picture yourself and your friends, sitting at the corners and on the chaise end, drinking coffee or tea, spread out, but brought together. Easily facing one another. Ample room to lounge and let the conversation flow along its natural currents. Or turn out the lights, lay back along the chaise while your two friends sit over in the regular sofa section, while watching the latest Tarantino or Coen Brothers film in complete comfort. Better yet, snuggle up to that special someone without any creeping irritation that there’s just not quite enough room.
The District sofa looks great in a home or apartment that emphasizes modern minimalism or a mid-century modern type feel. You’re not going to turn heads to the point of whiplash like you might with a George Smith or a Serena & Lily. But this sofa sets you off as someone who is design conscious, someone who doesn’t just take the most standard option. The lower set of the back of the sofa creates a feeling of openness in the room. The upholstery fits like a glove over the cushions. The pictures on the website are definitely not leading you astray. This is a really nice looking sofa.
Quality & Materials
Here’s where you really start to see the quality of the District sofa versus many direct-to-consumer Internet brands. The sofa delivers on comfort largely by the quality of the construction. The frame is benchmade with kiln-dried hardwood. It feels tight and strong, but also light. The natural material of the hardwood just gives a support and comfort that isn’t possible with other materials. Sure you can upgrade from here in terms of material, with more expensive sofas at Restoration Hardware or even sofas with a higher price point at CB2. But for the money, this sofa’s hard to beat.
Lastly, it's worth noting that the foam material used in these seats really holds up over time. While Burrow, Campaign, and some of the other brands we've reviewed here are so new that it's hard to know how long their form and function will endure, we can say with certainty from personally having owned a CB2 for years, that the cushions and frame maintain their performance for the long-run.
